Mikaela Mayer, ranked #1 in the world at light welterweight. She should have been an Olympian in 2012 and it's her goal to be there in 2016. She is a boxer, a model, in a Dr. Pepper commercial, could easily be a public and motivational speaker. She is a model. Yes I know I already said that, but as I looked at her biceps bulging through her sleeves and knowing that I was within a quick jabs reach of being knocked out by an Olympic level athlete, it was hard not to be knocked out by how stunning she is. And then she tells her story. How there was collection of wrong decisions and little support that had her going down the wrong path. And how sports, boxing, may have just saved her. USA Boxing has partnered once again with Northern Quest Resort & Casino and Spokane Sports Commission to hold the 2013 U.S. Boxing National Championships, the premier Olympic-style boxing event in the United States. Mikaela will be among the 300-500 athletes that will be in the region by the weekend. For the second straight year, The USA Boxing National Championship will be an open tournament in both the men's and women's division. This tournament will determine the USA's international travel team for 2013. It’s another step in the process towards being an Olympian and for Mikaela, it’s another piece of the journey that has brought her success, discipline, new friends and a chance.
