Raul Ibanez belted a two-run homer to back a solid outing from Joe Saunders, as the Mariners doubled up the White Sox 4-2 in the opener of a three-game series at Safeco Field. Saunders gave up just one run over six-and-a-third innings as he improved to 4-and-5. Jesus Sucre [[ SOO-cray ]] and Kendrys Morales also plated a run each for the M's, who have won three-of-five. The three-game series continues tonight.

Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez was recalled from his minor-league injury rehab assignment Monday. He has yet to be activated from the disabled list. Gutierrez still is dealing with a hamstring injury and has missed 35 games.

The University of Washington announced Monday that former Husky and NFL quarterback Damon Huard has accepted a position on the football staff. Huard will become the program's chief administrative officer focusing on player development and professional growth, according to a school press release. Huard will also remain as color analyst for UW football radio broadcasts.

Pac-12 presidents and chancellors agreed to a student-athlete initiative Monday to continue to improve the health and safety of the conference's athletes. The group seeks to do something to cut down on injuries. The plan includes an expanded research program, establishing a head trauma task force and limiting contact in football practices.
